Nant Gwrtheyrn, was a busy quarrying village (1860-1920) which was abandoned in the 1970s when the quarries were closed. The site is now the National Welsh Language and Heritage Centre that lies on the northern coast of the llyn peninsula in north Wales.

As the gentle whispering breeze cast’s its invisible shadow upon the sands, the sun sets upon the horizon igniting the sky with its incandescent flame. The blue angels are everywhere; spreading their wings in celebration, adding a flavour to the recipe. The restlessness in my heart retreats into the shadows leaving me with a sensation that I liken to a pond with no ripples, that fleeting moment when you feel like you have no care in the world with nothing to agitate or cause anxiety.

Nature has an uncanny ability to surface moods and emotions that lie entrapped deep within our souls. Is it the search for tranquility that stirs these emotions inside us? perhaps the silence, the visual blend of mesmerising pastel colours in the sea and the sky, or perhaps the repercussions of the gentle waves caressing the shores?

The blue hour infuses an intoxicating mix of magical ingredients in secret proportions; that attempt to fill an elusive void in our hearts, igniting forgotten memories, perhaps, of a past that lies dormant in the essence of our being.

The Magical Brecon-prelude

The Magical Brecon Beacons, I think just the name in itself creates a sense of awe. This is the first part of a series as Kapcha and I explore the wilderness in the Brecon a mountain range in south wales.

So what’s with the name you ask?

Good question, I looked it up, and according to Wikipedia. The name appears to have been derived from an ancient advance warning system of announcing approaching invaders by lighting signal fires (the beacon bit). The Welsh name of the ancient kingdom that the Brecon belonged to was “Brycheiniog” anglicised to “Brecon”. “Brycheiniog” was probably derived from “Brychan” the founder of the kingdom, so there you have it.

One of the most famous trails, the “Brecon Horseshoe” is a Ridge walk around the “Taf Fechan”. The highest point of this mountain range is the “Peny Fah” at 886m.

What makes it special?

I feel much of the beauty and majesty of this mountain range can perhaps be attributed to its Geological origins. This mountain range is formed of limestone (from the deposit of the shells of crustaceans millions of years ago). The larger part of the Black mountain range contains Old Red sandstone, Carboniferous Limestone and Twrch Sandstone. This erosion resistance perhaps accounts for the interesting and majestic landscape the Brecon commands.

The Brecons are also home to the adorable Welsh Mountain Ponies that you will no doubt encounter on your journey. These friendly equines force you to shed your urban stresses, and make the most of every moment that you share with them. Their relaxing attitude to life is truly inspirational. For those with an interest in history, there are many remains, roman and prehistoric . Stone circles, round barrows, and evidence of human settlements are widespread in this national park. Join me as I attempt a visual narrative of the magical brecon beacons in this series.

Curious minds searching for the truth, a thirst that no drink from this world can satisfy.

Eternal bonds instilled within us, unassuming yet purposeful, that emerge,

Like a butterfly from a tightly woven cocoon as it awaits the unfolding of its destiny;

The search for that magical bubble that will carry their dreams for a moment then burst to allow them to make new ones that are more beautiful than the last.

Bonds that are woven with simplicities and complexities of unknown proportions; mixed with a magical ingredient that we call life as it witnesses its challenges and rewards that shape us.

A mammoth task made effortless with a confluence of hearts, bodies and spirits that unite, to flow as a cascading force of inspiration for those who follow them.

I reflect on these glimpses of spoken and silent celebrations,

Moments that inspire hope, love and kinship,

In a multitude of languages, cultures, and perceptions,

But as one force with the eternal bonds of parenthood, love and compassion.

We thank the supreme force for everything in the realms of cognition and beyond, for giving us purpose; as we attempt to recognize ourselves by engaging with others within our sphere of influence.

It was one fateful day a 100 years ago, that a young woman called Sonora Smart listening intently to a mother’s day sermon thought it right to honour her father… and thus it came to pass.
